Boys to Men
We believe in… the next generation
A man stares down the barrel of an AK-47 assault rifle. Facing him, with his finger twitching the trigger, stands a thirteen year old boy-soldier. What happens next?
The man looks into the eyes of the child and sees the future of a nation.
Living to tell the tale, our partner in Sierra Leone set about rescuing as many child soldiers as he could. He shared his home with them and rehabilitated them against all the odds. Before long a home for fifty ex-boy soldiers was established. But it wasn’t easy in a country that put real guns into the hands of its own children.
Today the war is over and the healing has started. Today the centre is still filled with boys and orphans, but those original ex-child soldiers have matured into responsible men – role models that constitute the future of their nation. They are starting their own businesses, making profit and benefitting their community. The children in their care sharpen their pencils, study hard and dream of following them to university.
We love this story because it seems to defy logic – it shows a desperate situation that was transformed into a beacon of hope. We partner with the boys and men in this story because we believe in them and want to be part of their future. We’d love you to be part of it too. Join us and help to write the next chapter with them.
