Bringing hope to forgotten children

We believe in… families for all

In Ukraine, orphan care is traditionally carried out in orphanages. But children in these institutions rarely see life outside the orphanage walls, and are not prepared for the real world when they leave. Today’s Family has been working with 130 children in two orphanages in Kiev to help prepare them for life after the orphanage. Through art, games and drama, the team teaches important life skills, and enjoys getting to know each child. Other young people are introduced to children in the orphanages, make friends, and often invite their new friends home for visits.

Since 2003, Today’s Family have also been speaking to the Ukrainian government about the difficulties faced by children leaving orphanages. They have helped develop programmes providing vocational training, jobs and apartments to care leavers.

Albert Kitcher, Director of Today’s Family, is part of the UN Human Rights Committee and is working to see the introduction of a robust and clear system for fostering and adoption in Ukraine so that children can grow up in loving, local families.
